Signs, Benches & Tourist Information

Following consultation with Forest Enterprise the Waverley Route Heritage Association are to provide seats in prominent positions along one of the most walked sections of the Waverley Route, between Steele Road & Whitrope Summit.

Along this distance of approximately 5 miles it is envisaged that seats will feature in as many as 10 locations giving walkers and tourists to the area the opportunity to sit back and take in the beautiful & breathtaking views whilst taking a rest at the line side.

On clear days the Cheviots, the Solway Firth and the mountains of the Lake District are easily visible from a number of the vantage points.

A number of information boards will also feature alongside, giving those using the seats some idea of how the point at which they are sat once looked when the railway was in use and further information about the immediate environment.

At Whitrope Summit two seats have already been provided and special signs erected, indicating distances to Edinburgh & Carlisle, and marking the 140th Anniversary Year of the Waverly Route being opened in full, 1862 to 2002.

Slightly further north of the summit, and plans are also underway to form a tribute & dedication to the constructors of the railway; navvies who braved the elements to build the Waverley Route all those years ago. A small masonry cairn complete with brass plaque will commemorate Whitrope Tunnel together with the lives of those who worked on the construction, indicating the importance such mammoth feats of engineering play to our built heritage.

Also near Whitrope Summit, an information board has been erected which details ongoing work of the W.R.H.A. This board has been dedicated to the late Bill Stitt, a lamp-lad from Riccarton Junction who was born in Whitrope Tunnel Cottage (East).

At Riccarton Junction North signal box site, another information board has been erected, dedicated to the late Kit Milligan, author of Riccarton Junction - Just a few Lines, and past-resident of Riccarton.
